Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR)

Carol is fully certified in the revolutionary technique of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). EMDR has proven to be especially successful in treating symptoms related to trauma. It utilizes a newly discovered and highly effective concept of bilateral stimulation, which involves using touch or sound to stimulate the left and right sides of the brain in an alternating fashion. EMDR has been proven to be incredibly effective at helping individuals move past incidents of trauma and get back to living a normal life.

Client Testimonial: “Before EMDR, my life was plagued with symptoms related to PTSD after I experienced a traumatic event. I had nightmares, and would wake up sweating. I avoided situations and became somewhat antisocial. I drank more than I ever have to try to forget what had happened. Sometimes I just felt completely numb to the whole world around me. Carol asked me if I wanted to try EMDR for my symptoms and told me that sometimes traumas get kind of stuck in our brains. She said EMDR helps the brain process the trauma so it isn’t stuck anymore. EMDR saved my life. I still remember the trauma, EMDR doesn’t make you forget, but the strong emotions and body sensations aren’t there anymore when I think about it. EMDR and Carol truly have been a godsend.”

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

Internal Family Systems is a unique therapeutic approach that recognizes that infinite parts that make up each person. IFS rests on the philosophy that all people have an internal family of parts of themselves that surround a core self. People are operating from their core self when they feel confident, calm, peaceful, in-control, and content. However, IFS believes that sometimes other parts of ourselves take over, and this can cause us to feel anxious, angry, emotional, fearful, jealous, and unhappy. IFS helps one understand how they can feel split in certain moments, with one part of oneself feeling one way while another part feels something different. By working with each part, IFS re-harmonizes the inner experience and helps people return to the core of who they are.

Client testimonial: “I love using IFS because it is a therapy that is very accepting of every single part of who I am. I’ve struggled a lot in my life with having trouble making decisions. I didn’t understand why I wanted something but also didn’t want something, or why I liked something but also didn’t like it. These experiences were confusing to me. Through IFS, I learned that these were different parts of who I am that held different views on what was best for me. Carol guided me using IFS to reunite all my parts. Using IFS, I feel much more at peace with myself than I’ve ever felt with any other approach.”

Somatic Experiencing (SE)

With the word “somatic” meaning “of or relating to the body,” Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a psychotherapeutic approach that treats trauma-related symptoms as they manifest themselves in the body. It rests on the biology that when people experience traumas, or an intensely fearful situation in which they feel as though their survival is threatened and/or they are in danger, the biologically-wired survival mechanisms become activated. Because human beings are so complex, sometimes after experiencing trauma, our brains override our ability to self-regulate, and our bodies can get stuck in a state of survival triggering. Further, as our bodily sensations are activated at inopportune times, this can lead to self-judgment, shame, and a myriad of other unpleasant emotions and experiences. SE guides people in the art of learning how to cope with the bodily sensations that accompany this triggered state. When we learn how to effectively manage and cope with bodily sensations, we can resolve the issue as it manifests itself in our bodies.

Client testimonial: I had never been to a therapist before who used SE. All of my previous therapists were “talk therapists” who put a lot of emphasis on talking about my trauma. I’ve always thought of therapy and mental health as a ‘head’ thing. I never knew there was anything that focused on the body, nor how detrimental it can be to overlook the body. Carol guided me through my symptoms of trauma with an SE focus and I have never had better results. Through working with Carol and using SE, I’ve learned how to listen to my body, and I’ve stopped judging my body’s reactions. As a result, it’s become easier to deal with my body when it becomes activated. I used to be ashamed, but I’m not ashamed anymore. Now, I feel empowered.”
